This special event recognizes outstanding members of our school community whose leadership, dedication, and impact reflect the values and vision of Legends. LEGENDARY TEACHER AWARDS
HUMANITIES: The James Baldwin Award for Courageous Teaching & Truth
Honors an educator who teaches with intellectual rigor, cultural awareness, and fearless truth-telling.
STUDENT AFFAIRS: The Mary Church Terrell Award for Student Advocacy & Leadership
Recognizes excellence in student support, advocacy, and community leadership.
ELA: The Pura Belpré Award for Literacy & Liberation
Celebrates an educator advancing literacy as a tool for identity, voice, and freedom.
MATH: The Katherine Johnson Award for Academic Precision & Excellence
Honors exceptional data-driven instruction and commitment to student mastery.
SCIENCE: The Ellen Ochoa Award for Scientific Curiosity & Innovation
Recognizes innovative teaching that inspires inquiry, exploration, and excellence.

The Legends Legacy Award
The highest student honor recognizing a scholar who truly embodies the mission and spirit of Legends Charter School.
Criteria:
• Demonstrates academic commitment and consistent effort
• Models strong character and integrity
• Positively influences peers and the school community
• Represents the values of Legends both inside and outside the classroom
Octavia Butler Award for Imagination & Innovation
Recognizes a student whose creativity elevates learning and inspires curiosity.
Criteria:
• Demonstrates creative problem-solving
• Contributes original ideas in class
• Shows curiosity and bold thinking
• Positively influences peers through innovation
Fannie Lou Hamer Award for Student Voice & Empowerment
Celebrates a student who uses their voice responsibly and uplifts others.
Criteria:
• Speaks up respectfully and confidently
• Advocates for fairness or classmates
• Shows leadership in group settings
• Contributes to an inclusive classroom environment
Bayard Rustin Award for Service, Support & Community Care
Honors a student who consistently supports the school community.
Criteria:
• Frequently helps teachers, peers, and school events
• Shows reliability and responsibility
• Goes above and beyond without prompting
• Strengthens the community through acts of service
Dr. Mae Jemison Award for Scientific Brilliance & Curiosity
Recognizes a student with strong scientific inquiry and exploration skills.
Criteria:
• Actively engages in science labs and projects
• Asks meaningful questions
• Demonstrates strong scientific reasoning
• Encourages curiosity within the classroom
Zora Neale Hurston Award for Literacy, Storytelling & Cultural Pride
Celebrates a student who excels in literacy and cultural expression.
Criteria:
• Demonstrates strong reading, writing, or storytelling ability
• Enriches discussions with thoughtful insight
• Shows pride in cultural identity through academic work
• Inspires others through communication and creativity
Benjamin Banneker Award for Mathematical Reasoning & Excellence
Honors a student who demonstrates strong mathematical thinking, precision, and a commitment to academic excellence.
Criteria:
- Demonstrates clear analytical and logical reasoning
- Approaches challenging problems with persistence
- Applies math concepts accurately in class discussions, work, and projects
- Shows consistency, focus, and growth in mathematics
LEGENDARY Fellow Awards
Septima Clark Fellow of the Year Award
The Septima Clark Fellow of the Year Award honors an AmeriCorps Legends Fellow who demonstrates exceptional commitment to service, leadership, and educational impact. This award recognizes a fellow whose work strengthens school culture, uplifts students and community, and reflects the core values of AmeriCorps and Septima Clark’s legacy of service through education.
